JCSP Library

Library Mission Statement

The library seeks to impact positively on the learning and social experience of the student in school, foster a love of reading and an improvement in literacy levels and pave the way for lifelong and autonomous learning amongst the students. Particular emphasis is placed on those students following the JCSP programme.

JCSP Demonstration  Library Project

The Junior Certificate Schools Programme is a national programme coordinated by the Curriculum Development Unit of the Department of Education and Science. The JCSP programme is based on the concept that all young people are capable of real success in school and that they can have a positive experience of education if the conditions are favourable. The JCSP Demonstration Library Project was set up to demonstrate that a good library which caters for the needs of students with literacy difficulties actually impacts on their learning experience and allows them to address and overcome these difficulties.

The Library Collection

The library boasts a wide range of resources including books, magazines, DVDs, audio books, and board games. There are over 10,000 items in stock. The collection is user-led and user-focused. Both students and teachers are actively encouraged to suggest resources to be added to stock. Trips are organised occasionally to allow students to choose their own book from a local book store.

The Opening Hours

During term-time the library is open from 8.00 in the morning and after school until 4.30pm where possible. All JCSP students have timetabled English and Maths classes each week in the library. Separate book clubs are held for 1st, 2nd, 3rd year and senior students as well as parents and staff and further details on these are available from the librarian.

Several times during the year guest speakers are invited in to visit the library. These have included the following:
